Ischia's Weather

The climatologist Christopher Mennella described Ischia as "the climatic jewel of Italy". It has a pleasant annual average temperature and most seasoned travellers know from previous experience on the peninsula and its minor islands, including Ischia naturally, that August is the hottest month while January its coldest.

Ischia's seasonal average temperatures vary, though in general, it is safe to say that June through to August are preferred holiday months. The island does, however, reach its peak temperatures, well into 30 and 40 degrees centigrade, and yes, does welcome most of its Italian and foreign visitors to its shores as the Summer solstice approaches.

Indeed, because temperatures may reach such peaks, most southern Italian localities continue their traditional siesta hours, shutting down commercial activity and taking cover during those particularly hot afternoon hours. You will find most Ischians either resting in the shade, enjoying their long family lunches, preferably in air-conditioned trattorias, or likely dipping into the refreshing Mediterranean waters. Siesta hours do apply to almost all stores, closing for the customary Italian 'pranzo', or lunch, though a few, scattered tourist-friendly shops, as well as restaurants, bars and cafés stay open to service their appreciative patrons. It is advisable for travellers not accustomed to this level of heat to take advantage of this time for a well-deserved nap back at th

eir hotel or perhaps find a nice shaded 'terrazzo' or bar to pass the hot afternoon hours. The summer evenings, however, are magical and provide the perfect weather as the island awakens from its afternoon slumber to much more pleasant climes, averaging anywhere from 25 to 30 degrees centigrade. Some travellers will nonetheless prefer the relatively cooler, perhaps less crowded springtime season, when the temperature is quite mild, though you will need a light jumper at night.

Autumn is also pleasant with daytime temperatures ranging from 15 to 20 degrees centigrade. Do, however, expect some rain during this season.
